How Are Granite Headstones Made?

Granite headstones are commonplace in cemeteries across the world. Their popularity is largely due to factors like:

But how exactly are these headstones made? Most manufacturers use this four-step process:

  1. Designing the Headstone: Monument firms generally begin the process by designing a headstone to the customer’s specifications. Years ago, the design was typically drawn by hand. Today, however, most companies use computer software instead.
  2. Cutting the Granite: Once the design has been finalized, the monument company then cuts the granite to the desired shape. The stone may also need to be polished during this stage.
  3. Engraving the Headstone: After the granite is cut to size, the manufacturer engraves it. Most headstones include a name, dates, and a brief message. In some cases, they may also feature a picture of the decedent.
  4. Installing the Headstone: Once the headstone has been manufactured, the monument company installs it at the cemetery. This process can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the responsiveness and cooperativeness of the cemetery.

From design to installation, the manufacturing of a headstone usually takes less than six weeks.
